Lake Success-based Flushing Financial plans to launch a commercial bank to help diversify its balance sheet and gain a piece of municipal deposits. The expansion follows similar moves by New York thrifts, including Long Island’s New York Community Bancorp.
The unit, to be called Flushing
Commercial Bank, will operate out of the saving and loan’s New Hyde Park branch until its own branches are built. Flushing’s commercial bank will be “limited purpose,” meaning it will take deposits from municipalities but not lend to them, said Maria Grasso, chief operating officer at Flushing Financial.
Examples of other thrifts that have cracked commercial banking include Rockland-based Provident New York Bancorp and Lockport- based First Niagara Financial Group. For Flushing, municipal deposits will be the focus, Grasso said, adding that it’s a low- cost of source of funds for her company. Read more…
